Junior League of Bakersfield Projects
|
|
JLB actively seeks to impact the community through direct service programs. Our current focus of child welfare reflects our commitment to serving the needs of our community. JLB projects focus on improving the lives of women and children in the community by providing volunteers, training and funding to non-profit organization in Kern County. The projects last for approximately three years and applications are accepted in the fall for consideration.
Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center Renovation
The Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center and the JLB enjoy a historical bond in that JLB founded the center in the 1970's. This project will provide the monies and volunteers to renovate the Kitchen/Science Center. The renovation of the Kitchen/Science Center will be utilized by 400-600 children who will be able to explore the world of science through a renovated center.
Children's Birthday Parties at Bethany Homeless Center
This project will provide a birthday party for children grades K-8 that are living at the Bethany Homeless Center. We expect to celebrate approximately 20 children each month at the JLB Community Center. In addition to providing a direct service project, research shows that when a child's birthday is celebrated, there is a direct and positive correlation for their self-esteem.
Kids in the Kitchen
Junior League's Kids in the Kitchen is a nutritional seminar to help combat childhood obesity; fast becoming a national crisis as 1 in 3 children are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. With a focus on balance and nutrition, fun and interactive lessons on how to make healthy food choices is presented. After the presentation, children break into groups and rotate through 5 different food stations; making healthy snacks and learning why they are healthy.
Impact Bakersfield
In addtion to the larger JLB Projects, all active JLB members volunteer their time and resources in support of various short-term charitable endeavors in Bakersfield. We call these smaller projects, “Done-in-a-Day” projects.
